Partner, Head of Corporate and M&A, Kyiv
Global Co-Head of International Private Equity
CMS Cameron McKenna LLP
I have been living and working in Central and Eastern Europe for over 10 years, the last 3 of which have been in Ukraine. I have a regional role, with a focus on private equity and M&A transactions throughout Europe and beyond. But I live and work on the ground in Ukraine itself, where on a day to day basis I, together with my colleagues, help investors to do business in Ukraine.
Ukraine is witnessing some exciting reforms at the moment, all of which will help to make Ukraine a hugely attractive country to invest in in the medium and long term. And in the short term there may well be opportunities for investors who have the right risk appetite. But either way the fact remains that to successfully do business in Ukraine, you need the right advice from the outset – and you need advisers who not only understand the local environment, but crucially also understand what is important to Western investors – as in reality what may not be considered to be an issue here in Ukraine, may nevertheless be an issue in the West, and you need trusted advisers who have the experience and track record to bridge that communication gap.
In addition to being a UK qualified solicitor, I also hold a Masters in Finance from the London Business School (with a principal focus on corporate finance and M&A/private equity), and clients have remarked that this helps to ensure that any legal advice given to clients is delivered in a commercially pragmatic manner, focusing on the issues which are the most important from the perspective of the client.
We CMS have been operating in Ukraine for nearly 20 years now, with us opening our office on the ground 7 years ago. We can help clients with any business-related needs that they may require – from setting up a subsidiary in Ukraine, registering with the tax authorities, reviewing local employment contracts, helping with the acquisition or lease of a significant piece of real-estate, obtaining licenses and permits, entering into Production Sharing Agreements with the Government, reviewing and negotiating loan documents, to helping you to implement and negotiate high profile M&A transactions.
